Summary

New York Times bestselling author Allison Brennan's latest riveting suspense involves a podcast that revisits the murder of a popular sorority girl as listeners call in clues to help solve the campus cold case。

Senior Lucas Vega is obsessed with the death of Candace Swain, who left a sorority party three years ago and never came back。 Her body was later found, but the culprit never was。 Lucas thinks he has uncovered new evidence, but to prove it he creates a podcast that traces Candace's last hours。 Listeners crowdsource what they remember as college lecturer and former US Marshal Regan Merritt adds her expertise。

Then one caller turns up dead。 Another hints at Candace's hidden life that may implicate other sorority sisters。 Regan uses her sources to bolster their theory but discovers that Lucas is hiding his own dark secret。 The pressure is on to solve the murder, but first Lucas must come clean about his own motives, before the killer strikes again。

I’m always a fan of when a mystery novel uses a podcast。 I find it interesting how the author is able to use a podcast to further advance the developments of an unsolved case (in this novel, a murder)。 The Sorority Murder was no exception。I wasn’t a big fan of Lucas and his reasons for doing the podcast。 It seemed like he was always hiding something and not telling the full truth。 I really liked how the author added the character, Regan, a former US marshal。 Regan really added to the novel both I’m always a fan of when a mystery novel uses a podcast。 I find it interesting how the author is able to use a podcast to further advance the developments of an unsolved case (in this novel, a murder)。 The Sorority Murder was no exception。I wasn’t a big fan of Lucas and his reasons for doing the podcast。 It seemed like he was always hiding something and not telling the full truth。 I really liked how the author added the character, Regan, a former US marshal。 Regan really added to the novel both in her experience and her maturity。 It really took the novel up a level and the premise didn’t seem so far fetched。It did take a while for the novel to get going, but once it did it was really exciting and I was curious on how Candice’s disappearance would tie in with her murder。 I did find the ending (and the killer) predictable, so I was hoping for more of a twist ending。Really liked the use of the podcast and how Lucas was able to get guests to call in and give anonymous information about the murder。Thank you to Netgallery and HARLEQUIN – Trade Publishing (U。S。 & Canada) for an ARC in exchange for my honest review。 。。。more

This one was interesting, the way it was laid out with the podcast, going over events。 The way one comment that seemed like a one off lead to another to another, until we had what really went on。 By then I was sad for so many of these girls and how they were manipulated。 So many bad things didn't have to happen and one thing snowballed into so many others。 By the end it was great that there would be closure for many, but still so much needless death。 This one was interesting, the way it was laid out with the podcast, going over events。 The way one comment that seemed like a one off lead to another to another, until we had what really went on。 By then I was sad for so many of these girls and how they were manipulated。 So many bad things didn't have to happen and one thing snowballed into so many others。 By the end it was great that there would be closure for many, but still so much needless death。 。。。more

The Sorority Murder by Allison Brennan is a standalone suspense novel。 The story starts off with a podcast of a cold case, with Lucas Vegas (a criminology student), concentrating on the unsolved three-year disappearance and murder of student Candace Swain。 The police suspect a homeless man of killing Swain, with the man never found; but Lucas believes otherwise, and asks those who remember anything of the murder to call into the podcast。 Lucas tries to put some pieces together, but with the reco The Sorority Murder by Allison Brennan is a standalone suspense novel。 The story starts off with a podcast of a cold case, with Lucas Vegas (a criminology student), concentrating on the unsolved three-year disappearance and murder of student Candace Swain。 The police suspect a homeless man of killing Swain, with the man never found; but Lucas believes otherwise, and asks those who remember anything of the murder to call into the podcast。 Lucas tries to put some pieces together, but with the recommendation of his advisor, he convinces former US Marshall Regan Merritt, who has just returned to visit her father, to join the podcast and use her expertise to help him in putting the pieces together。Regan left her job, after the terrible death of her young son; and stays with her father; the case does get her attention, and she and Lucas work well together。 Soon the podcast opens a can of worms, with many members of the Sorority not happy to have this opened again, especially with some of them calling in new information anonymously。 After a few days of the podcast, Regan warns Lucas to keep his eyes open, and lock all doors, since the podcast seems is opening long-buried secrets。 Regan is an excellent investigator, using her expertise to interview former and current students; unraveling truths from the past, and she is mostly the lead in this story, working with Lucas。What follows is an exciting, chilling, action packed adventure that had me unable to put the book down。 When someone is found dead, and other attempts to stop the podcast, Regan begins to suspect someone, but cannot prove anything; she also learns from Lucas, another reason he was determined to open this cold case, which did lead to Swain’s murder。 Regan escalates her investigations, and worries that with the attacks on some sorority sisters, Lucas could very well be in danger。 The last third of the book had me on the edge of my seat, as the tension increases and lives are on the line。 The Sorority Murder was an exciting, fascinating story, wonderful heroine, great secondary characters and wild climatic ending。 If you enjoy suspense, whodunit, murder mystery, you should read The Sorority Murder, which was very well written by Allison Brennan。BarbThe Reading Cafe 。。。more

This is a good thriller but it is also a little predictable。 Regan has just quit being a US marshal following the death of her son when she's introduced to Lucas, a graduating student who's started a podcast。 He needs her help organizing the investigation of the death of another student years before, and she might just agree to it, even though she feels there's more in his motivation than mere curiosity or wanting to use the project as his capstone。 3+。When I look back at the story there was a g This is a good thriller but it is also a little predictable。 Regan has just quit being a US marshal following the death of her son when she's introduced to Lucas, a graduating student who's started a podcast。 He needs her help organizing the investigation of the death of another student years before, and she might just agree to it, even though she feels there's more in his motivation than mere curiosity or wanting to use the project as his capstone。 3+。When I look back at the story there was a good number of plot twists and they were indeed interesting。 I like the plot as a whole。 The problem was the execution, and one of the reasons may sound weird: I think this writer was too organized。 Because of how perfectly laid out the story was, it became easy to guess the culprit, the reason, and a lot more。 It also made both Regan and Lucas not very easy to like, because I was seeing through the process, which caused me not to see them as characters anymore but tools to the writer。 I don't think I'm a smart reader, so I'm sure this story is predictable。 That aside, I could still enjoy it。 I really wish I had been surprised, fooled and all, it's supposed to be a mystery, but the story itself, the death of the student, everything that came before it and that happens while Lucas and Regan go on with the podcast, I think it was also worth reading。 Unfortunately, it all just lacked the punch it could have。 I can't compare to other books by Allison Brennan, being my first by her, but I would read more from her。Honest review based on an ARC provided by Netgalley。 Many thanks to the publisher for this opportunity。 。。。more

Don't let the title fool you! This isn't a low budget teenage slasher film。。。。。。。or book。 Instead it is a very convoluted story of a murder or two。 Lucas is working on his senior project and has decided to do a podcast looking in to the cold case murder of a sorority girl that took place three years prior。 This sets up a quality suspense story that could have taken place in any environment, but place it on a college campus and in the Greek system and you had a layer of loyalty and secrecy。 Unlik Don't let the title fool you! Rich women behaving badly is my favorite trope and this is a SORORITY MURDER。 I was expecting crazy Greek life drama。 There’s not much of it。I loved Regan’s character — I typically enjoy law enforcement characters, and she was no exception。 Her character kept me reading。 Lucas’ POV wasn’t for me。 I would classify this as more of a mystery than a thriller, and I prefer thrillers to mysteries。 That said — if you like mysteries and don’t want anything too dark or heavy, this is likely a good fit for you。 。。。more

For his senior project, Lucas gets approval to do a podcast about a girl, Candace Swain, who disappeared three years prior after a sorority party and was discovered dead two weeks after her disappearance。 It's since been delegated to the Cold Case Files。 Lucas actually knew Candace personally as she tutored him, but he has an additional, more personal reason for being obsessed with her case。 Joining him on the podcast is Regan Merritt。 Regan used to work for the US Marshal Service, specializing in tracking down people。 She's suffering from a deep personal loss and temporarily living with her father in Flagstaff。 Regan has a personal relationship with Lucas's senior advisor, and he asks her to assist Lucas with his podcast。 Lucas already has some important clues as to what might have happened to Candace, and with Regan's assistance, his podcast is finally bringing out some anonymous sources that begin to fill out the puzzle。 Of course, the podcast is also making some members of the college community anxious that the truth might finally come to light, which they can't allow to happen。。 After one of their sources turns up dead, Regan knows they're onto something and she goes into high gear to protect Lucas, as well as to solve the case。Allison Brennan is one of my favorite authors, and I thoroughly enjoyed The Sorority Murder。 I'm hoping to see Regan again in future novels。 My thanks to NetGalley and MIRA for providing me an eARC in exchange for an honest review。 The Sorority Murder is scheduled for publication on December 28, 2021。 。。。more

I was provided an e-arc of this book by harper collins。 release date 12/28/21。 Allison Brennan surprised me with this。 it took me until around 40% to get invested, but once I was i couldn’t put it down。 we are presented with a lot of characters throughout this story ; i didn’t really care for it at the beginning, but allison does such a good job at providing backgrounds for every single one。 i will admit, having two main characters named rachel and regan did throw me off - especially when i was I was provided an e-arc of this book by harper collins。 release date 12/28/21。 Allison Brennan surprised me with this。 it took me until around 40% to get invested, but once I was i couldn’t put it down。 we are presented with a lot of characters throughout this story ; i didn’t really care for it at the beginning, but allison does such a good job at providing backgrounds for every single one。 i will admit, having two main characters named rachel and regan did throw me off - especially when i was reading while tired hahah。 if you think true crime, this book reads exactly like a true crime case。 you’re on the outside looking in as you try and help lucas and regan figure out what happened to candace swain 3 years ago。 the sorority aspect is really what drew me in, i don’t participate in one but the premise behind sororities and thriller always draws me in。 i loved how the clues just slowly came into play, and we as readers were able to piece things together for ourselves。 everything that intertwined this case, and all the backstories took a while to be brought to light and i liked that。 i don’t like when we are given the truth early on。 i think this book is a good, quick read。 there were some things i didn’t really like about it as well ; the jeep was the main thing。 we are given clues of a jeep that is following lucas and regan around or showing up at pivotal moments。 i get what the author was trying to do, and it worked until we are literally shown the character that drives the jeep - regan is an ex marshal。 she notices everything but yet didn’t put 2 and 2 together as soon as she saw the jeep? plus - as soon as i read who was driving it i just knew they were involved in a big way。 it didn’t kill the story for me, but it irritated me a little。 the story flip flops povs in a way that is kinda confusing。 it won’t even be a new chapter and it will just jump onto someone else。 i wish we could have gotten more backstory / journal from candace’s perspective。 they were really interesting, and i enjoyed them a lot but we didn’t get a lot of them。 over all, the story was good。 it was easy to follow, and kept me interested。 if you like true crime, i recommend。 。。。more

Who killed Candace? That's the question Lucas hopes to answer with the true crime podcast he's doing as a senior project at the university where he's a forensic major。 He talks to her sorority sisters, friends, and so on but it's not until Regan, a former US Marshal, gets involved that things take off。 These two delve into the evidence (again and again) that exists and look for new leads。 Keep in mind, btw, that Lucas is a college student。 He's also hiding something not only from Regan but reall Who killed Candace? What's it about (in a nutshell):The Sorority Murder by Allison Brennan is a secret-filled story about a college student's journey to solve a cold case that happened right there on his campus three years ago。 By using a limited-time podcast and with the help of Regan Merritt, a former US Marshal, he manages to stir the pot enough to worry someone。 Still, will it lead to the answers he is looking for? What I Enjoyed:I enjoyed the podcast angle。 It's funny because I don't listen to podcasts in my ev What's it about (in a nutshell):The Sorority Murder by Allison Brennan is a secret-filled story about a college student's journey to solve a cold case that happened right there on his campus three years ago。 By using a limited-time podcast and with the help of Regan Merritt, a former US Marshal, he manages to stir the pot enough to worry someone。 Still, will it lead to the answers he is looking for? What I Enjoyed:I enjoyed the podcast angle。 It's funny because I don't listen to podcasts in my everyday life。 Still, I really have enjoyed it when it's used in thriller stories。 It's an excellent technique for keeping a story current and telling backstory without becoming overwhelming to the reader and adding too many pages to a book。 Also, the podcast can reach many people quickly, which helps the plot stay fast paced and moving forward。I loved all the many, many secrets and the mysteries within the mystery。 These kept the story moving quickly and provided those jaw-dropping moments I adore。 As each secret was revealed, a new related mystery popped up。 It is amazing how many apples fall out of this particular tree when Lucas starts shaking it。 There are so many twists and turns, I had to hold on for dear life。I enjoyed how sororities are portrayed。 Usually, a sorority is represented as a shallow collection of girls。 In this story, however, the portrayal is more about the deep friendships formed and how the girls look after one another while in college and even after graduation。 Of course, there may be some bad apples in the bunch, but it is a mystery after all, so what fun would it be if there weren't some apples that are rotten to the core。Characters: Lucas Vega is a college student in his senior year。 Deciding to do a cold-case podcast for his senior project, he comes across as very heartfelt in his endeavors and the epitome of the stereotypical boy next door。 But as the secrets start revealing themselves, will he come out as squeaky clean as he first appeared?Regan Merritt left her position as a US Marshal when her 10-year-old son was killed in retaliation for one of the cases she worked on。 She is asked to help Lucas with his podcast。 She soon finds herself wholly entangled in the mystery and revealing the murderer that evaded the police for three years。 Her character is particularly well-developed and would make a great lead character in a series (fingers crossed)。Reminds Me Of:The podcast angle reminded me of The Night Swim by Megan Goldin, though it does not have all the trigger warnings that story had。What I Wish:The story is a bit long though it didn't bother me until the end。 Once it seemed that all the secrets had been revealed, it felt like the final conclusion dragged on very long。 That was quite a shock, considering how fast-paced the story was until that point。To Read or Not to Read:If you are looking for a good, solid mystery to make time quickly fly by, The Sorority Murder by Allison Brennan is just what you're looking for。 。。。more

This is a new to me author that I will be reading more from。 This book was great。 A mystery, thriller, edge of your seat ride。 You will wonder and guess who did what to whom throughout。 Three deaths。 Three murders。 Three attempted murders。 All starting with one accident。 Could all of this have been avoided? Possibly。 But then you would not have the story。 This book takes you on a ride that is full of surprises。 Full of twists and turns。 Keeps you wanting more。 Wanting to know who did it。 Who cou This is a new to me author that I will be reading more from。 This book was great。 A mystery, thriller, edge of your seat ride。 You will wonder and guess who did what to whom throughout。 Three deaths。 Three murders。 Three attempted murders。 All starting with one accident。 Could all of this have been avoided? Possibly。 But then you would not have the story。 This book takes you on a ride that is full of surprises。 Full of twists and turns。 Keeps you wanting more。 Wanting to know who did it。 Who could have murdered an innocent young woman。 And why。 Was she about to reveal someone's deepest secrets? Maybe。The sorority sisters are a band of very tight friends。 Should be forever friends。 Always there for each other。 No matter what? But something went dreadfully wrong on the night in question。 One person left and was never seen alive again。 What happened to Candice? What did she know that could have caused someone to hurt her。 To take her life。 Who was it? Why? This book did have a few flaws but nothing dreadful。 Nothing that takes away from the story at all。 It's truly great。 One that will have you wanting to find out what comes next。 A podcast brings to light new things that happened。 Things that the killer is afraid of。 Lucas wanted to find out who killed Candace and was willing to do almost anything to find out。 He brought to light some things that the killer didn't want anyone to know about。 It all lead to an accident that happened six years before。 All of your questions will be answered。 You won't be left hanging。 This story wraps up so nicely and does not leave you hanging。 It leaves no stone unturned。 Someone will pay for what they did。 Or almost did。 Or tried to do。 Justice and closer。 Maybe these victims families will find that at least。 Thanks to Lucas Vega。 Without him these deaths may have never been solved。 He dug deep and found all he needed along with the help of an ex-marshal, Regan。 She worked hard to help solve this case。 And to save a few lives。Thank you #NetGalley, #AllisonBrennan, #HarlequinTradePublishingMIRA for this ARC。 This is my own true thoughts about this book。5/5 stars and a very high recommendation。 It's very good and I can't wait for her next book! 。。。more

I like that the MC has a podcast and that he is into true crime。 The book is told in kind of a true crime podcast fashion as well, which is so much fun。 I loved how the characters were developed and how the world was built。 I also thought the mystery worked well for the most part and the plot kept me interested in the story enough to find out what happened at the end。However, the pacing is so so slow in this book in the beginning and it picks up in the middle。 The book is a bit of an info dump in the beginning, which put me off of it for a bit。 The book spends a lot of time going back over old evidence and repeating the same thing over and over again。 The ending was also a bit of a letdown and it kind of was outside of the realm of expected。Verdict: it was good。 。。。more

Im still unsure how to accurately review this one。 I did enjoy aspects of it, however there were things about it I did not enjoy as well。 Lets start with the positives first。 I love novels that include podcasts/true crime aspects。 This one definitely delivered that。 It gives you all the podcast behind-the-scenes and also the background and footwork that goes into a podcast。 The mystery in the story is also well done。 Now, I am not sure if it was because the book is quite long, or there were seve Im still unsure how to accurately review this one。 I did enjoy aspects of it, however there were things about it I did not enjoy as well。 Lets start with the positives first。 I love novels that include podcasts/true crime aspects。 This one definitely delivered that。 It gives you all the podcast behind-the-scenes and also the background and footwork that goes into a podcast。 The mystery in the story is also well done。 Now, I am not sure if it was because the book is quite long, or there were several details that were put into the novel。 I was unsure who the "killer" actually was until closer to the end。 Regan's additional story line was unnecessary but since I enjoyed this tourtured character I also enjoyed the added information regarding her background。 Now the not so good。 I hate this part。 This book TOOK FOREVER to get going。 I felt like I was spinning in circles and rereading the same 10 pages over and over again for about 100 pages。 I almost DNF'd it。 Lucas also could have used a bit more character development。 He seemed cold/rigid and I didn't find him all that believable。 My last challenge was the ending。 I did enjoy the twist however, it was EXTREMELY far fetched。 All in all I feel middle of the road about this one。 。。。more
